Council Minutes
August 13, 2009
Present: Karen Bobeldyk, Pastor Dwaine Bruns, Susan Curtis, Rich Haselhorst, Mark Kranz, Rachel Kuebelbeck, Dan Kuntz, Pastor Linda Lagergren, Bob Pedersen, Steve Streng, Jeanie Wilkens, Wilbur Wilkens.
Call to order: 6:30 PM.
Devotions: Wilbur
Approval of meeting agenda: motion, seconded, approved.
Approval of May 14 minutes: motion, seconded, approved.
Approval of July minutes with the following change on page 2: “Southwest Minnesota Synod”: motion, seconded, approved.
Committee reports:
Outreach: Dan reported Resurrection’s 4th of July parade float earned 2nd place; he recognized the Anderson and Hayne families for their efforts. Campus ministry at St. Ben’s mall is scheduled for Sept. 1.
Stewardship: Mark reported stewardship Sunday is scheduled for Nov. 22. A couple of individuals will be recruited to help out.
Christian Education: Rachel reported Rally Sunday is scheduled for Sept. 13; future plans are to have this be a much bigger event. Every 4th Sunday will include crafts for students and spiritual renewal for teachers.
Church in Society: School supplies will be collect through August; will be distributed to Bemidji Place of Hope and St. Cloud/St. Joe elementary schools. GRIP member Jeanie Wilkens reported the group’s emphasis is shortage of housing for large families.
Staff support: Jeanie reported the RLC discussion group served lunch for staff.
Property: Bob reported the loss of a couple of lawn mowing volunteers; the ditches are too hazardous to mow. He explained volunteers assume their own risk. He also noted windows in the church, especially in the narthex area, have deteriorated; he’ll be obtaining cost estimates for replacement.
Worship and Music: Karen reported on the Worship on Wednesday (WOW) evening worship service scheduled to begin September 16. After considerable discussion regarding whether the 5:00 evening meal should be posted at a specific cost or “free will” offering, the following motion was approved: the meal will be posted as a “free will” offering; costs will be evaluated in subsequent weeks. $400 from the designated 25th celebration anniversary fund will be reallocated towards the evening service, including promotional posters and Newsleader adds.
Youth: Sue reported their committee will meet next Sunday to discuss Youth and Family Ministry position and fund-raising plans. A celebration cake for Sarah is scheduled on August 23.
Finance: Rich expects current general fund imbalance of 9.44% will be caught up in August and September.
Staff reports: submitted by Pastor Dwaine, Pastor Linda and Sarah Lind.
Growth in faith/leadership activity – Pastor Linda. Discussion: Who are your heroes? What makes them a hero?
Old business:
Green Team: Pastor Linda reported a $3500 grant award for rain garden proposal; money is expected in October. Work on the rain garden may be part of an Eagle Scout project.
Pastor Dwaine noted the additional Wednesday evening service will result in additional work hours for Minister of Music.
New business:
Pastor Dwaine read resignation letter from Youth and Family Minister Sarah Lind.
Motion, seconded and approved adding 10 hours per week to Pastor Linda in order to fill Youth and Family Ministry job duties effective September 1. Emphasis will be placed on most significant job duties; volunteers will be recruited to assist. Position will be posted and filled as soon as possible.
ELCA churchwide assembly is scheduled for next week. Discussed issues of sexuality facing our denomination.
Nominating committee: encouraged council to begin conversations to nominate members for council positions; terms of those expiring include Sue, Steve and Bob. Jeannie agreed to work with the nominating committee.
Motion, seconded and approved utilization of fellowship hall for Winter Farmer’s market.
Dan reported on thank you letter from Lutheran seminary for our support of Pastor Intern Mark Matthews.
